Field Recordings from Balkans

Field Recordings, creative idea, production, composition, visual artwork: Ugnė Makselytė

Travel comrade: Justas Korskovas

Places visited: North Macedonia: Skopje; Kosovo: Pristina; Bosnia and Herzegovina: Sarajevo, Banja, Luka; Slovenia: Ljublijana; Greece: Thessaloniki.

This EP consists of a two-part soundscape composition project created in 2022. The soundscapes are created from field recordings made while traveling through the Balkan region.

The journey was made by hitchhiking with a dear friend Justas. The aim of the work is basically just to reveal the experience of culture and everyday life in the Balkan region from the perspective of a traveler. The collages were created quite spontaneously, aiming not to over-process the sound of the original field recordings, but reflecting on their composition in the context of each other. The collages were composed to reflect the inner experience of the journey, which reveals itself as a fusion of experiences of different places in the mind of the listener/traveler. In the end, even though at least a few countries and certainly more than a couple of cities have been visited, the memories of the journey emerge as merged and complex images. For example, the dripping water from the gutter in Thessaloniki, together with fragments of a recorded conversation on a bus in Skopje.
