Hidden Canal: Sound Walk Residency in Salford 2024

In 2024, I participated in the Hidden Canal residency, a collaborative project inspired by the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal. The residency paired artists from Salford/Greater Manchester with European artists to create a unique Sound Walk along the canal's route, blending site-specific sound art with the area's rich industrial history.

5 artists from Greater Manchester and 5 artists from Europe worked on the Sound Walk and it started at the end of February with an international residency at Cobden Works

The artists involved are:

  • ANNE LOUISE KERSHAW
  • CARO C
  • DAVID MCFARLANE
  • FIONNUALA DORRITY
  • TOM KITCHING
  • MAURO AMARAL (FARO, PORTUGAL)
  • ROBERT KLAPCIC (RIJEKA, CROATIA)
  • SELMA EBBANS (LEEUWARDEN, THE NETHERLANDS)
  • UGNĖ MAKSELYTĖ (KAUNAS, LITHUANIA)
  • WYTSE DIJKSTRA (LEEUWARDEN, THE NETHERLANDS)

Working alongside Scottish sound artist David McFarlane, we created two pieces titled As Above and So Below. These works were inspired by the canal's visible and hidden elements, reflecting its layered past and unseen presence.

  • International Collaboration: The project began in February with a residency at Cobden Works, bringing together 10 artists: five from Greater Manchester and five from Europe.
  • Public Presentation: The Sound Walk culminated in a two-day event on May 18–19, featuring audio from a mobile stage and a canal-side festival at Middlewood Locks.
  • Audience Engagement: Visitors experienced the Sound Walk via the Echoes app, exploring the canal's route in Salford while immersing in the audio artworks.
