Magic Carpets Residency in Kaunas 2024

September 2024 | Kaunas, Lithuania During my residency with the Magic Carpets platform, I collaborated with the Dainava community and textile artist Felicia Hansen to create site-specific works exploring soundscapes, collective memory, and sustainability. Highlights included the sound installation “Šeimos Dalis”, deep listening workshops, and our collaborative video piece “Sacrifice of a Teddy Bear”, all presented at the “Let’s Play Fluxus!” exhibition during the Fluxus Festival.

“MagiC Carpets” is a “Creative Europe” platform uniting 21 European cultural organisations that create opportunities for emerging artists to embark on journeys to unknown lands and to create, together with local artists and local communities, new works that highlight local specificities and compensate for the shortage of story-telling existing in the modern society by enhancing cultural accessibility, cultural activism and participation.

During the residency, I conducted workshops introducing the community to deep listening practices and soundscape explorations. Participants recorded everyday sounds in Dainava’s park, practicing mindful listening and engaging in sensory-focused exercises.

This process culminated in a soundscape picnic where participants collaboratively created soundscapes using selected foods and recorded their communal experience. The resulting sound installation, “Šeimos Dalis” (“Part of the Family”), wove these recordings into a sound piece reflecting the community’s spirit and shared memories. Presented in the “Let’s Play Fluxus!” exhibition, the installation invited visitors to engage with the work collectively, experiencing the soundscapes of Dainava with their eyes covered, encouraging immersive listening.

In collaboration with textile artist Felicia Hansen, I created a video sound piece that premiered during the Fluxus Festival exhibition. Our work combined Felicia's deconstructed teddy bears with my soundscapes, creating a multisensory experience that explored the emotional resonance of repurposed objects. Together, we developed a rich dialogue between textiles and sound, enhancing the tactile and visual impact of her installations with immersive audio elements.

This collaboration underscored the transformative potential of interdisciplinary art, engaging audiences on multiple sensory levels and amplifying the emotional depth of our shared narrative.
